Former special forces commander calls on leaders to foster loyalty to ADF

Retired special forces commander Heston Russell is urging the Australian public to remain respectful of the nation’s armed forces in relation to the investigation into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan going forward. Speaking at the War Memorial in Canberra, Mr Russell said he was there to visit those who have been commemorated. “Make sure that inspires us to move forward and best defend them in maintaining their meritorious unit citation for the meritorious service that they performed,” he said. “The military has and will always be the most trusted constitution of this country.” Mr Russell said the last special forces rotation in Afghanistan came out in 2013, and since then “dozens of special force missions and operations that the Australian public does not yet know about” have “served the Australian public in quiet”. “I would call on our senior leaders to make sure that message is portrayed to the Australian public,” he said. Mr Russell said people who “may be wavering in their dedication” to Australia’s “fantastic armed forces” should be “swayed by facts as opposed to public opinion”.
